EMC upgrades RecoverPoint
posted on 25 February 2008 17:20
EMC has upgraded RecoverPoint, its continuous data protection (CDP) product to add both local and remote continuous data protection and replication.
Continuous data protection (CDP) writes every file write to a second target thus providing data recovery to any point in time. Replication sends changed file data across a network link to a second server so as to provide protection against a source server loss.
RecoverPoint is continuous data protection technology originally sourced from Mendocino in late 2005. (That company has apparently now ceased trading.) EMC has added better integration with CLARiiON CX3 drive arrays and broadened support for host operating environments and VMware.
RecoverPoint v3.0 combines continuous data protection and continuous remote replication (CRR), functionality generally provided in separate products. It also extends support for Windows, VMware ESX, Linux and Solaris. It is now fully tested and qualified for replicating VMware File System data on CLARiiON CX3 arrays.
With this extended support, customers can now
deploy RecoverPoint in three different scenarios, including:
- Heterogeneous storage environments where customers leverage intelligent fabrics via the EMC Connectrix family of products.
- EMC CLARiiON CX3 environments where customers leverage the storage processor to perform array-based splitting.
- Environments where customers utilize the host-based driver to perform the write-splitting function.
RecoverPoint's new integration with CX3 storage arrays carries out the write-splitting function in the storage array, with no need for host drivers. It enables CDP and CRR protection for iSCSI and Fibre Channel attached data volumes.
Mike Fisch, Director of Storage and Networking for The Clipper Group said "EMC is uniquely positioned in the market today with EMC RecoverPoint, which provides dual CDP and CRR for the same data through a single, enterprise-class appliance."
Doc D'Errico, VP and GM of EMC's Infrastructure Software Group, said, "The advances we've made to RecoverPoint significantly set us apart from vendors that only offer point products."
EMC experienced a greater than 100 percent growth in RecoverPoint revenues in 2007.
EMC plans to make EMC RecoverPoint version 3.0 available in March. No pricing information was supplied.
