5,400rpm and 120GB

Not being phased - yet - by flash solid state disk (SSD) Toshiba has introduced its fastest-yet 1.8-inch microdrive.

The MK1216GSG comes with 120GB capacity and spins at 5,400rpm, providing a 15msec average seek time. A companion MK8016GSG offers 80GB but both units come with two platters. They each weigh 62g and have an 8MB cache.

Both drives are designed to SATA 2.6 specifications and use a micro-SATA connector. This uses the Serial ATA 1.5Gbit/s interface with a 489Mbit/s transfer rate.

Toshiba's aim is to offer enhanced performance for ultra-thin and light PC applications. The idea is to offer capacity levels usually found in the 2.5-inch form factor to small format mobile intelligent devices.Toshiba says the devices are more rugged than the best 2.5-inch drives, by more than 100Gs while operating and several hundred Gs in non-operating mode.

Toshiba has shipped more than 60 million 1.8-inch disk drives since 2000 and has consistently been the market leader in this hard disk drive segment.
