$2.8 billion post-DVD optical market in 2011

Says Japanese research firm

A Fuji Chimera Research Institute report predicts that the next-generation optical disk market will be worth $2.8 billion in 2011. That would 168 times more than in 2006 when it was worth $16.666 million.

The market has been stymied by the Blu-ray - HD-DVD stalemate but, since HD-DVD is now hors de combat, the market should grow quite strongly.

The research company believes that both the Beijing Olympics and the 2010 FIFA World Cup will help boost the market.

It is understood that neither Plasmon's UDO format nor the holographic formats from Optware and InPhase feature strongly in the forecast which, in effect, is largely a Blu-ray forecast.
