Microsoft adopts Blu-ray

Windows device driver support

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has committed Microsoft to supporting Sony's Blu-ray optical disk format at the company's MIX08 conference.

As the Toshiba-backed HD-DVD format is now a dead duck, leaving the Xbox 360 without a high-definition optical disk format, Microsoft's hand is being forced.

Ballmer said that Blu-ray device driver support in Windows is already being worked on. The company has not actually committed to Blu-ray support by the Xbox 360 but our understanding is that this is a negotiating stance in the context of discussions with Sony.

That company's PlayStation III is a rival to the Xbox 360 and it has a Blu-ray drive built in.
