Blu-ray disk drive and burner shipments increase
posted on 12 March 2008 09:24
Taiwan's main optical disk drive drive manufacturer, Lite-On IT, has increased its steady ship rate of Blu-ray disk Read-Only Memory (BD-ROM) drives and burners, according to a report.
The volume is under 100,000 units per month. PC suppliers such as Dell and HP are pondering whether they can incorporate BD-ROM drives in their PCs and, potentially, notebooks.
Another Taiwan-based optical disk drive manufacturer, Quanta Storage, is having its slim form-factor BD-ROM drives and, possibly, burners, certified and, if successful, may start shipments by the middle of this year.
It is likely that high-end PCs, such as gaming models, and high-end notebooks will appear before the end of this year with BD-ROMs installed. Microsoft's Blu-ray conversion can only encourage this.
