HP's home Media Vault

Home/SOHO/small biz NAS and D2D backup

HP has introduced a 500GB home/SOHO/very small business Media Vault offering file storage, disk-to-disk file protection and an iTunes library.

The mv2120 has a single 500GB Serial ATA (SATA) drive with a spin-down feature to save power. A spare drive bay can be used to add RAID 1 (mirroring). The unit connects to a home network via an Ethernet cable. If this connects it to a wireless router then WiFi PCs and notebooks can connect to it wirelessly.

It runs Linux plus software enabling support of Windows XP and Vista, Mac OS X and Linux PCs. A small business with fewer than ten employees can use it. Larger SMEs are pointed towards the mv5100 products with either 1TB or 1.5TB capacity.

The mv2120 can be set to protect files on networked PCs continuously, daily or weekly. It can function as a central iTunes server with networked PCs getting iTunes music files from it. It can also function as a photo library web site via a separate subscription to an HP- nominated service.

An external disk can hook up to one of its two USB ports to act as a backup device for the mv2120. Remote access over the Internet is supported. Unlike the mv5100 with its internal universal power supply this unit requires an external power supply 'brick' (which is supplied).

The street price is $299 and the mv2120 is available immediately.

Meanwhile Microsoft's Home Server is still suffering from its file corruption bug.
