Squirrel away your data
posted on 23 April 2008 07:31
UK online backup service supplier SquirrelSave is offering free access to historical backups.
The service, aimed at consumers and small office/home office users, offers online file backup at £4.95/month with a 20GB capacity limit. But historical (previous month and older backups) are accessible free of charge.
A backup demon runs on a client PC or laptop and mirrors selected directories in real time to a remote server. If a file is modified locally then it is immediately updated on the backup server, or as soon as a network connection becomes available. It's not necessary to wait until you get back to the office to back up your data.
The user declares which directories are to backed up and then the software looks after them automatically. Data is transferred using 128-bit encryption and the files remain encrypted on the server to help ensure that content is safe and secure at all times.
Concerning historical data, SquirrelSave declares most other providers charge extra for historical back-ups or store the data within a user's monthly capacity allowance.
PS.The SquirrelSave logo is called Cedric.
