Seagate has shipped a billion drives

posted on 23 April 2008 09:49

It took 29 years. The next billion should take less than five.

Seagate has shipped 1,000,000,000 disk drives; 79 petabytes of hard drive capacity. No other drive manufacturer has shipped a billion units.

It took Seagate 29 years of production to reach the billion drive mark. Based on cuurrent manufacturing capacity and trends the firm reckons it will reach 2 billon drives shipped in less than five years time; we suspect there will be a huge number of 2.5-inch drives in there.

Seagate guesstimates that Western Digital will reach its billion shipped number around 2012. The Gartner Group reckons more than 500 billion drives were shipped last year, compared to around 30 million in 1990.
