La Cie has called on favoured designer Neil Poulton to craft a rugged external hard drive inside an orange rubber sleeve.

The Rugged Hard Disk uses a Hitachi 2.5-inch TraveStar 5K200 hard drive and comes with USB 2.0 or USB and Firewire/400/800 interfaces. Power is delivered through these interfaces. The disk is mounted via shock-absorbent rubber mounts to a scratch-resistant aluminium shell and is further protected by a shock-absorbing orange rubber sleeve.

There is proprietary LaCie software  to format the drive. The utilities provided include LaCie ‘1-Click’ Backup Software for both PC and Mac and SilverKeeper for Mac.

Nolwenn Rozen, LaCie Mobile Product Manager, said: "The Rugged Hard Disk is one of LaCie’s most popular products and has been so for a number of years. We recently upgraded capacity to 320GB, and now with recent innovations, we are able to increase it again. With all LaCie products, we will continue to push the envelope on capacity as technology permits."

The drive is available now and an 80GB version costs $89.99 whilst the 500GB version is priced at $339.99. Intermediate capacities of 160, 250 and 320GB are also available.
