EMC VMware customers get the smarts about application discovery
posted on 20 May 2008 15:54
EMC has updated the Smarts ADM product to operate better in VMware environments, automatically discover virtual machine appplication dependencies on IT resources and so help build better data protection and disaster recovery plans.
Smarts ADM (Application Discovery Manager) v6.0 passively watches application traffic with its 'Virtual Listener' through the VMware Virtual Switch (vSwitch) to provide dynamic, real-time visibility into virtual relationships. This obviates the need to deploy agent software in each virtual machine.
The end result is the establishment of dependencies of one virtual machines to another in their delivery of application services. This enables the the construction of better data protection and disaster recovery plans for VMware Site Recovery Manager and VMware Consolidated Backup.
Smarts ADM 6.0 can be used in conjunction with EMC IT Compliance Analyzer – Application Edition 1.1, also announced today – to help facilitate IT compliance within VMware implementation strategies, VMware operational best practices, and regulatory requirements such as PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) and HIPAA.
As VMware has changed the way data centers are being run so too do data centers have to respond by adding VMware interoperability and integration to data protection, disaster recovery (DR) and compliance procedures.
Dennis Drogseth, Vice President, EMA, said: “VMware has the potential to bring a new level of speed and efficiency to businesses today, enabling companies to deploy new systems and applications faster. It can also enable superior business continuity for critical services by providing a resilient and dynamic set of resources to draw from to support desired levels of application service performance. But transforming the data center doesn’t come without critical changes in management tools, which need to adapt.”
Smarts ADM complements VMware VirtualCenter by enabling IT operations to automatically track and manage configuration changes and understand virtual-to-physical relationships in the application infrastructure. It provides continuous visibility into application services dependencies across a VMware-enabled infrastructure.
