Samsung's second generation terabyte hard drive
posted on 23 May 2008 17:07
Samsung has annmounced a 1TB EcoGreen hard drive to be marketed for audio/video storage and video surveillance applications.
It has a 3Gbit/s SATA interface, 32GB cache, and staggered spin-up support. This is a slow drive spinning at 5,400rpm and stores 334GB per platter, making it a 3-platter drive.
A 3-platter drive needs less power to operate than a 4-platter drive. Samsung says it uses half as much power as a 7,200rpm 3.5-inch drive. It will become available before the end of June this year. The company shipped its first 1TB in June last year.
Western Digital has also moved to 334GB platters in its 1TB drive.
