SSD RAID controller development
posted on 27 May 2008 11:04
RAID controller manufacturer AMCC has said it is working with flash memory solid state drive (SSD) manufacturers to develop a RAID controller for flash SSDs.
The RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Drives) idea is the same; duplicate data across drives with a parity calculation enabling partial data copying but full recovery to save space. A flash RAID controller needs to work with the very much faster response of flash SSDs compared to hard drives. It also needs to work with wear-leveling algorithms so as not to shorthen the working life of SSDs with their limited write cycles.
AMCC refers to flash SSDs as storage class memory and we can expect 3ware-branded SSD RAID controllers in the next 12 to 24 months if flash SSDs become as popular as the manufacturers hope.
