Sony's MicroVault USB drives compress data
posted on 27 May 2008 14:12
Sony's MicroVault Click USB thumb drives have integrated compression software raising efective capacity two to three times. An 8GB drive could store up to 24GB of data.
Sony Europe's Recording Media and Energy unit has announced MicroVault Click and Click Excellence USB thumb drives with 2GB - 16GB capacity.
All the drives have pre-installed Virtual Expander compression software. The Click Excellence read speed is up to 31MB/sec and the write speed 11MB/sec. The MicroVault Click drives have a black body with a colored top section; the color being coded to the capacity level. The Click Excellence model has an ivory-colored main part. In both ranges the USB connector slides out of the drive's body with no need for a cap.
The drives are compatible with the Windows ReadyBoost feature to speed PC/notebook disk I/O.
These new drives will be launched later this month. No pricing information was made available.
