FileTek mends desktop holes in compliance net
posted on 03 June 2008 08:18
FileTek has introduced a product to capture, classify and control desktop-produced unstructured content and bring it under the management of SharePoint content policies to ensure there is a single content compliance zone extending out from servers to the network's edge.
Its Trusted Edge Desktop Compliance Suite integrates with SharePoint Server 2007 and its records management function. SharePoint ECM (enterprise content management) policies can be enforced based upon the classification of unstructured content such as spreadsheets, presentations, documents and e-mails.
A FileTek spokesperson said: "By classifying content at the point of creation, which is at "the edge" of enterprise networks (desktops, laptops or fileshares), Trusted Edge enables the application of corporate policies to this unstructured information."
Content desktop users generate from MS Office apps, and others, is automatically classified, with user-settable policies if required, and then routed to the appropriate storage location. In effect the SharePoint repository is virtually extended to include all the desktops in an organisation where, it is estimated some 80 percent of content is created.
The benefits include increased retention compliance with regulations such as SarBox and HIPPA, reduced litigation costs as information is more discoverable, and optimized storage costs.
FileTek's Trusted Edge Compliance Suite also works with other ECM applications such as Open Text's LikeLink, and Symantec's EnterpriseVault. It also integrates with ECM apps from ClearView and IBM.
A FileTek spokesperson said: "We classify and put the right information into the right place. We then work with the archiving/ECM app to help better manage the content."
"Many archiving apps tend to do only email and manage the information based on how it is classified. Most of these email archiving apps provide a limited auto-classification option whereas Trusted Edge provides a combination of auto- and end-user classification options that provide a best practices approach to classification. This best practices approach is fundamental to supporting effective and highly defensible e-discovery processes. Trusted Edge offers users a highly targeted, more granular classification that will add more value to records management functions and help to mitigate eCompliance risks. "
He added: "SharePoint has become a widely adopted platform with what I’ve heard is close to 100 Million users. In addition, enterprises are adopting Sharepoint initiatives along side of their legacy ECM repository and archive applications and Trusted Edge is one way to federate storage between those applications."
"Regardless of the repository a company has made an investment in, Trusted Edge assures the right information goes where it belongs and adds a strong value proposition to SharePoint and other ECM and archive applications."
