Seagate 500GB notebook drives by Christmas
posted on 06 June 2008 16:01
Seagate CEO Bill Watkins told a Deutsch Bank analyst that he expected the company to be shipping 500GB notebook drives by the end of the year.
It only started shipments of 300GB SAS notebook drives at the beginning of June. A 320GB Momentus 7200.3 320GB SATA drive was announced in May.
The 500GB capacity point suggests Seagate will rev a fourth perpendicular recording generation to attain that capacity level and we could expect to hear about a Momentus 7200.4 500GB SATA drive before Christmas.
(It looks likely that WD will need another perpendicular recording generation areal density jump if the 20K rpm notebook drive story is true.)
