Faster USB 3.0 to be slower than expected
posted on 20 June 2008 10:15
USB 3.0, the faster follow on to the Universal Serial Bus we all enjoy so much, may only be six times faster than USB 2 and not ten or more.
Originally USB 3.0 was going to be at least ten times faster than USB 2.0. which runs at 480Mbit/s, roughly 40MB/sec. According to a market research agency, in-Stat, it will only run at 3Gbit/s and not the 4.8Gbit/s or more originally forecast. That is only 6.25 times faster than USB 2.0.
In-Stat expects USB 3.0 products to arrive in late 2009 and take four years to significantly penetrate the PC Peripherals and consumer electronics markets. Not all devices will need its speed. But large scale data transfers, such as gigabytes of data to external hard drives will certainly benefit.
The report, Wired USB 2008: SuperSpeed Is Coming, by Brian O’Rourke, an In-Stat principal analyst, takes up 47-pages, costs $3,495 and includes 54 tables and five figures. To order a copy or view an abstract visit: http://www.instat.com/abstract.asp?id=161&SKU=IN0804102MI.
