Six times faster Blu-ray WORM
posted on 24 June 2008 08:19
Panasonic has developed a Write-Once Blu-ray disk with a 6x writing speed and maximum data transfer rate of 216Mbit/s, 20 percent faster than 16x DVD-R disks.
The company says its adoption of new disk technology produces extremely level and well-balanced discs with highly precise signal grooves. This improves servo characteristics and enables the laser beam to focus to the right position when the disk is rotating at 6x speed.
The new disks have a wide power margin at any writing speeds from 1x to 6x, which, Pansonic says, enables high-quality recording, even if the drive's laser power fluctuates, resulting in greater overall drive compatibility.
Blu-ray disk drives compatible with 6X write-once Blu-ray disks are planned to be commercialized in Japan by the end of September 2008.
Panaonic suggests that the high transfer speed, along with the disks' 25 and 50GB capacity levels, allows consumers to use these discs for applications such as storing High Definition video or backing up PC data.
The new discs will be available in Japan with both 25GB and 50GB capacities in July.
