NAND flash growth weakens
posted on 02 July 2008 12:45
In a Semico report on the first quarter's NAND flash market the company says it expects only a 13% NAND revenue growth rate for 2008 compared to 2007. In 2007 revenue grew 25%, partly through an Apple effect.
Apple's NAND purchases for iPods and other devices stimulated the market. It is not happening this year, apparently because apple is not purchasing so much NAND with projected Apple product sales being affected by a consumer purchase downturn in the USA and, possibly, elsewhere.
Both the new MacBook Air and the refreshed iPhone 3G use NAND flash.
NAND shipments are expected to total 3.53 million units in 2008, compared to 2.51 million last year. NAND prices are expected to decline putting pressure on manufacturers who will have more than enough stocks and manufacturing capacity for the expected level of demand.
NAND flash shipments for business data storage applications are not growing fast enough to take up the slack.
