Tokyo, Japan - July 8, 2008 - NetApp's (NASDAQ: NTAP) Jon Elerath, PhD, an expert in hard disk drive (HDD) reliability, will present the address "Demystifying Reliability of Hard Disk and Solid-State Drives" at the DISKCON® Japan conference in Tokyo, Japan, on July 22-23, 2008.

In addition to his role as senior systems reliability engineer at NetApp, Jon Elerath is the chairman of the IDEMA-USA Reliability Committee and actively supports the IDEMA (International Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association) mission of setting and driving reliability as it relates to industry technology standards and benchmarks for the HDD and optical disk drive markets.

IDEMA is an international trade organization that represents the $35 billion disk drive industry. Founded in 1986, IDEMA is a volunteer-based group that serves as the voice of the disk drive industry and provides more than 400 corporate, university, and individual member companies with trade shows, technical conferences, symposia, education classes, networking events, and an active international standards program. IDEMA is also the founder and organizer of DISKCON USA, DISKCON Asia Pacific, and Information Storage Week in Japan.

Session: "Demystifying Reliability of Hard Disk and Solid-State Drives"
This presentation provides a comparative overview of HDD and SSD (solid-state drive) reliability from the perspective of high-end server and RAID data storage applications. Specifications and their statistical implications will be compared to those of HDDs. NAND-SLC flash and SSD structure, failure modes, failure causes, and mitigations will also be presented to explain reliability claims.
