Oslo Norway, (15 July, 2008): Tandberg Data (OSE: TAD), a global supplier of backup and archiving solutions, today announced a new program called Rebates for Recycling, a "green" initiative that helps IT managers save money as they help save the planet by reducing energy consumption.

Tandberg Data's Rebates for Recycling provides significant incentives - from $50 to $150 - for those who sign up to recycle old, inefficient tape storage devices and replace them with new, high-efficiency tape and removable disk based storage products.

IT equipment worldwide is responsible for 2% of CO2 emissions. At the same time that companies battle rising energy costs, they are trying to stay afloat amid an increasing deluge of data, which is coming at an increasing price-that's where companies consume a lot of power. Data centres are filled with "constantly on" servers whose continually spinning disk drives not only consume energy, but they then generate heat that must in turn be cooled to keep the data centre operational. With that in mind, making data centres more efficient will reduce operating costs from power utilization. So, for companies of all sizes, reducing power and cooling requirements and overall energy use makes sense from an economic perspective. Studies have shown that tape-based backup and archiving solutions can deliver substantial TCO benefits and energy savings, particularly as compared to spinning disks, with reports that 90% of the data stored on servers will never be accessed again.
 
"As IT and storage administrators upgrade their data protection solutions, we want to give them a green incentive to recycle their old storage device in favour of a new one with a smaller footprint, higher capacity, and greater energy efficiency," said Kjell Øyvind Aasene, Vice President EMEA, Tandberg Data.  "Disk and tape both have their place in the data centre, but the fact remains that tape is the most energy efficient and most economical data archival solution." 

Rebates for Recycling Program Details
When a customer agrees to recycle an old tape solution - any tape product whether it's from Tandberg Data or not - the company will give the customer a rebate toward the purchase of a new Tandberg Data tape or removable disk (RDX) device. Customers must submit the rebate request in advance online at www.tandbergdata.com/emea/promotions. The offer is valid through 30 September 2008 across EMEA and offers a variety of green discounts across its entire product portfolio.

All rebate requests must be submitted online. All rebate recipients will receive the discount upon purchase of a new product through the authorized Tandberg Data reseller of their choice. Tandberg Data will respond to both the recipient and the reseller when the discount has been authorized.  Authorization will be given within 48 hours of submission. Authorization and purchase must be completed by 30 September. Any purchase made prior to this authorization is not valid for the rebate.
