Blu-ray sales soaring in land of the rising sun
Sales of Blu-ray players and recorders have increased by almost 50 percent from May to June this year in Japan.
JEITA, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, put out these figures:
- May 2008 - 82,000 units
- June 2008 - 122,000, a record number.
If the trend continues we are looking at quite a ramp in sales which might be reflected in other countries.
The 40,000 unit rise is attributed to variously:
- the removal of the competing HD-DVD format,
- More liberal recording of TV shows is now allowed in Japan,
- Anticipation of the Beijing Olympics and high-definition video recording of events in August.
More here.
