posted on 25 July 2008 12:51
25 July 2008 –Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the technology and market leader in wide-area data services (WDS), today announced that Riverbed® has been accepted in the Microsoft Protocol Optimization Licensing Program (POLP).
Through this protocol implementation agreement, Microsoft gives Riverbed access to its intellectual property and technology so that Riverbed can build on its expertise and success accelerating and optimizing Microsoft Windows-based applications over the wide-area network (WAN).
With the recent release of version 5.0 of the Riverbed Optimization System (RiOS®), Riverbed is now able to provide application-level protocol optimization for Microsoft Exchange 2000, 2003 and 2007.
Over the past four years, Riverbed has led the industry in accelerating applications over the wide-area network to enhance remote and mobile worker productivity, as well as driving IT efficiency through enabling successful IT consolidation without application performance compromise for over 4,500 customers worldwide.
“We continue to deepen our knowledge of Windows and other Microsoft applications, like SharePoint, Systems Center Configuration Manager Server, Data Protection Manager and CRM, so that our customers can offer ‘wind in your hair’ access and performance of Microsoft applications to its remote and mobile workers,” said John Martin, VP of Product Management for Riverbed. “Working closely with Microsoft and its commitment to interoperability, we are obtaining access to application protocols to further enhance our customers’ experience and IT efficiencies of Microsoft applications over the WAN. Joining the POLP program is the next step in our previously announced vision to enable customers to incorporate Windows Server-based services on the Riverbed Services Platform.”
A vast majority of Riverbed customers leverage Riverbed Steelhead® appliances to accelerate Microsoft Office, Windows Server and Microsoft Exchange through optimization of underlying CIFS and MAPI protocols, as well as other Microsoft products such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, Microsoft -SQL Server, System Center Configuration Manager , System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) and Microsoft Dynamics CRM.
"At Golder Associates, we have 140 engineering offices worldwide, and are running a centralized SharePoint server as our main Intranet,” said Joe Potegal, senior network engineer, Golder Associates. “We were already running Microsoft SharePoint with Steelhead appliances and saw a 2.5x increase in performance for our staff collaborating on projects. With RiOS 5.0, SharePoint runs even faster. Documents that used to take 30 seconds to access without Riverbed now take 2 to 3 seconds, and our staff can collaborate from wherever they're working. We also have plans to migrate from Exchange 2003 to 2007, and the new Riverbed Exchange 2007 acceleration feature has given us the ability to do that with no concerns about performance, functionality or our consolidated architecture.”
