Sun endorses Intel launching its SSDs
posted on 20 August 2008 12:27
In an unexpected but co-ordinated marketing move Sun, HP and Lenovo enthusiastically endorsed the three Intel solid state drives (SSDs) formally launched yesterday at Intel's Developer Forum.
Reported four days ago the drives are as specc'd then.
Sun's John Fowler, EVP for systems, said in a video: "Intel's SSDs provide three times better performance and one fifth the energy consumption of hard disk drives. Sun is very excited about Intel's announcement today as this technology will change the economics of enterprise data centers."
Interestingly Sun and Samsung have been associated with the development of extended life SSDs. It looks like SSDs will be open sourced by Sun - but then Sun is very much in favour of Open Source.
HP and Lenovo were similarly enthusiastic making it obvious that Intel has picked up three OEMs for its X25-E, X25-M and X18-M SSDs. The specifics of which products will use which SSDs were missing but then this was an arrive-on-the-SSD-stage-with-a-blaze-of-glory announcement in which details didn't matter, just the shock and awe of Intel's slick marketing machine in action.
Intel would like us to believe that in SSD Wars the Intel Death Star has just arrived. Feel the force.
