Weill Cornell Medical College

Chooses Spectra Logic tape library

Weill Cornell Medical College stores more than 30TB of data from files, server configurations and databases. Weill conducts nightly backups of more than 600 GB of data.

The college’s previous backup system was having performance issues, so they decided to research updated libraries to simplify and improve their backup process. Weill Cornell Medical College also wanted to add encryption functionality to help safeguard sensitive patient data and comply with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations.

The IT team reviewed several products from IBM, Falconstor, Quantum/ADIC and Spectra Logicand ultimately purchased a Spectra T950 with Professional BlueScale Encryption.

John Ruffing, Assistant Director for Advanced Technology Integration Services, at the college, said: “Our top three criteria for the new system were performance, longevity of the product and encryption capability. Spectra Logic’s T950 met all three requirements, and their responsive, knowledgeable team sealed the deal for us.”

Spectra Logic BlueScale Encryption in the T950 lets the college compress, encrypt, and backup data in a single step without any changes to backup policies or procedures. The AES-256 bit encryption with complete key management works with all major operating systems, network connectivity options and backup software applications.

Ruffing said: “As a bonus, we did not need to redesign our previous network environment to add Spectra encryption.”

BlueScale Encryption works with existing backup policies and strategies, requires no additional hardware or software, and works with any type of legacy or new tape or removable media including LTO, SAIT, SDLT, and RXT virtual tape libraries.

“The Spectra T950 is a feature-rich storage platform offering a wide range of features—the ability to be configured with disk as a VTL, with encryption, and power monitoring— above and beyond traditional libraries that only offer tape backup,” Ruffing added.
